Hiphop artist: MC Lite, spoke on her life experiences as an international female Hiphop artist.

The major goal of “Hiphop Literacies” was to promote interdisciplinary research, teaching, and outreach around Hiphop, to stimulate ongoing dialogue and outreach across various disciplines in the academy and in the community. In addition to scheduled talks and workshops by renowned Hiphop scholars, artists and educators, the conference hosted presentations and performances by scholars, students and community members.

The conference also featured lecture and headline performance by MC Lite an internationally recognized Hiphop artist.

Brief Blurb about the program:

She talked about her duties and how the policies from her office effects young people in this state. Our students gained a clear understanding of her position as Vice Chancellor of the Board of Regents and how important that position is to their future. The benefices of the visit were two fold: her insight into the needs of college student and how they can become successful in their college career. Our students also had the an opportunity to talk to her about finding scholarship resources and grant opportunities. The financial guidance she gave them were the tangible evidence of the effectiveness of her office.

Husted’s Visit to HSA Columbus HS

Secretary of State Jon Husted visited Horizon Science Academy on Thuesday, May 3, 2012, to continue his 2012 Grads Vote Tour. Secretary of State John Husted talked to our senior class about voting.He talked to our senior class, shared his personal story from being adopted as a child all the way to become the Secretary of State. Mr.Husted hopes this tour will help increase the number of 18-year-olds who are registered to vote in Ohio. Grads Vote is an outreach initiative that provides high school seniors with the information needed to become active Ohio voters. As part of the outreach effort, Secretary Husted is visiting high schools around the state to educate and inform students on the importance of voting.

October 9, 2012 is the deadline to register to vote for the November 6, 2012 Presidential Election. Individuals may register if they will be 18 on or before Election Day. Registration forms and additional information are available online at GradsVoteOhio.com.

First Annual College Fair Event

First college fair held on Thursday April 12, 2012

Our first college fair was a great success. The students benefited from each representative that came to visit. This was an excellent opportunity for college-bound students to meet college representatives and admission counselors. It provided a valuable experience for our students by allowing them to conveniently obtain admission information from different colleges, universities, and institutes.

College representatives gave very positive feedback about our event and about how well our students behaved.

State Superintendent visits HSA Columbus HS

On Thursday, March 22, 2012 The Superintendent of Public Instruction, Stan W. Heffner visited Horizon Science Academy Columbus High School. The visit consisted of a breakfast meeting with members of the HSA High School Board and other guests and a question-and-answer session with students. The meeting was not only informative but inspirational as well.

Mr. Heffner congratulated the school for our “Excellent” rating and the Blue Ribbon School nomination. He stated that Horizon Science Academy defied the odds and proved the doubters wrong with a great distinction. He also spoke of the importance of education. He told the students that to him, “Education means opportunity. Education can be a great equalizer.” After his motivating speech, students had a chance to ask a wide range of questions which he answered thoroughly. Senior Nimo Ahmed, a School Ambassador, asked a question related to teacher diversity. He replied that unfortunately there are not many teachers with diverse ethnic backgrounds reflecting student body in our schools, but he wants to change that hopefully in the near future.

The meeting concluded with Superintendent Heffner and guests taking pictures with students, teachers, and administration. After, the board members and Superintendent Heffner received tours from the School Ambassadors.

Among the visitors were Joni Hoffman, Director of Office of Community Schools, OAPCS President Bill Simms and Ron Adler, President of Ohio Coalition for Quality Education.

Representative Carlton Weddington’s Visit

On February 2nd, 1070Ryze and the African American History Class held the first African American Read-In event at HSA. The event began with readings from literature by students and discussion about the state of African American literature and culture. The event concluded with a special poetry night and performances by 1070Ryze featuring State Representative W. Carlton Weddington, spoken word artist Tiffanie Shanks, and remarks by Rev. Johannes Christian, who survived a disfiguring highway accident in 2001.

On Wednesday, March 7, 2012 five of our senior students, our director Mr. Sechen, our public relations associate, Mr. Dove, and a faculty member, Mrs. Harless met with Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman at his office to discuss the successes of our school and reflect with Mayor Coleman about his experience as a student, father, and mayor. Mayor Coleman shared insightful advice with our students, pointing out the necessity for our younger generations to be leaders in their homes, neighborhoods, schools and thus the world. He said, “Expect much of yourself and you will produce much; expect little of yourself and you will produce little.”

HSA Columbus High School Celebrates Third Consecutive Year as a School of Excellence

On October 13th, Horizon Science Academy celebrated its third consecutive year as a “School of Excellence”.

To open the celebration, the 115th Ohio Wing Eddie Rickenbacker Squadron of the CivilAir Patrol presented our colors. Afterwards, senior Chasity Hendrix, one of the school ambassadors,led the Pledge of Allegiance. Our School Director, Mr. Sechen remarked on the great strides foracademic success throughout the school’s history. He attributes this success to the parents, staff, the management company Concept Schools and of course the students. Representative Mike Duffy ofthe Ohio House of Representatives presented the school with a certificate from the Ohio House of Representatives. He congratulated the students for their hard work. In his speech, he said he will be willing to help the students in any way he can. Ron Adler, President of the Ohio Coalition for Quality Education, presented the school with the 2010-2011 Honor Roll Award for High Academic Achievement.

During the assembly, there were various student performances including the dance club and choir. The dance club performed a dance based on the Chocalate Nutcracker. The HSA Choir, led byMrs. Herman, performed the popular song Firework. Senior Alexander White presented a speech entitled, “What Excellence Means to Me.” Many notable members of Concept Schools and the HSA community were in attendance including Superintendent David Disli and HSA School Board President Melvin Richardson.
